Press Release: 4th Palm Biodiesel Conference 2-4 October 2023 - Balancing Carbon Neutrality, Energy Security & Social Impact
The MBA has issued a press release in conjunction with 4th Palm Biodiesel Conference organized by the Association and also the flag-off of PETRONAS' first palm biodiesel B100-fuelled road tanker on October 2-4, 2023 in Putrajaya:
Putrajaya, October 3, 2023 – YAB Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of Plantation and Commodities delivered the keynote address and officiated the 4th Palm Biodiesel Conference this afternoon at the Putrajaya Marriott Hotel. Organized by the Malaysian Biodiesel Association (MBA), more than 100 delegates gathered at the 2.5 days conference; representing the whole spectrum of the palm biodiesel value chain, including Government policy makers, researchers, producers, suppliers and customers, from both abroad and across Malaysia. It is also supported by the Council for Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) as its Platinum Sponsor and its industry counterparts; the Indonesia Biofuel Producer Association (APROBI) and the Thai Biodiesel Producers Association (TBPA).
The theme ‘Balancing Carbon Neutrality, Energy Security & Social Impact’ was selected for this year’s conference to reflect the palm biodiesel industry’s role in supporting national and global targets towards carbon neutrality, providing sustainable alternatives to common energy sources and its contribution to the social well-being of the society.
The MBA previously hosted the inaugural Palm Biodiesel Conference in August 2017 in Kuala Lumpur and similarly, the conference provides a valuable opportunity for the palm biodiesel industry, its valued partners, stakeholders, and the Government to meet again in person particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic; to share updates, experiences and most importantly, to network with one another.
In conjunction with the conference, YAB Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof also flagged-off PETRONAS’ first palm biodiesel B100-fuelled road tanker. Collaborating with the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities, Malaysian Palm Oil Board, Scania Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Shaziman Transport Sdn Bhd, PETRONAS is the first energy company in Malaysia to undertake this endeavour that underscores its commitment to the National Agricommodity Policy and support the implementation of lower carbon fuel solutions within Malaysia's transportation sector.
The conference also boasted a comprehensive panel of eminent local and international experts who will share and discuss various aspects of the palm biodiesel / biofuel industry from its market dynamics, the impact from the national and international policy framework, case studies on usage and its application in the different sectors, to the status of national biodiesel implementation programmes in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
Palm biodiesel was supplied to the Malaysian national biodiesel programme for the transport sector since 2011 and for the industrial sector since 2014. To date, total palm biodiesel consumed by the national biodiesel programme exceeds well over 5.5 million MT. Based on a conservative estimation on greenhouse gases (GHG) savings of 60%, this represents approximately 10.5 million MT of CO2 emissions saved compared to burning fossil diesel. This is equivalent to 465 million mature trees sequestering the equivalent amount of CO2. That would require 9.25 million acres or 37 433 sq km, which is slightly larger than the Pahang state. The use of palm biodiesel will help fulfil Malaysia’s commitment to the Paris Agreement of UNFCCC during the COP 21 in France, which is to reduce 45% GHG emissions intensity to GDP by 2030 (based on emissions intensity in 2005).
